The Biology of Alignment: Why Energy Is the Missing Link in Medicine

What is alignment of energy - or what scientists call coherence - and why does it matter in the body?
When I wake in the morning and sit quietly to meditate, then set my intention for the day, what am I actually doing? Practices like meditation, breathwork, grounding, or intentional stillness have often been dismissed as woo-woo. But increasingly, modern science is beginning to describe these experiences in biological terms.
And much of the story leads back to the smallest structures inside our cells: our mitochondria.
For decades, we were taught that mitochondria are simply the powerhouses of the cell - tiny engines producing the energy that allows us to live and breathe. But this metaphor turns out to be overly simplistic. Mitochondria do not function as isolated little batteries scattered throughout the cell. They exist as an interconnected network - a dynamic, responsive system that senses and responds to the environment inside and outside the body - thoughts, emotions, environmental chemicals, magnetic fields, exercise, psychological stress, infection, light, nutrition, sleep deprivation, temperature changes, alcohol, smoking, pesticides, infrared radiation. They respond to everything.
Researchers like Dr. Martin Picard of Columbia University are helping expand this understanding. Mitochondria are not just energy generators - they are communicators, constantly interpreting signals from the nervous system, hormones, and our internal emotional landscape. As Picard writes, “The landscape of biomedicine is shifting. The molecule-centric view of life is evolving into an energy-centric perspective. The implications for our lives, for science, and for medicine are enormous.”
This shift is profound. For much of modern medicine, biology has been viewed primarily through a chemical lens - genes, molecules, receptors, and biochemical reactions. But beneath these processes lies something even more fundamental: energy flow and communication across living systems.
Mitochondria sit at the center of that energetic network.
When we live in chronic stress, fear, or emotional turbulence, our biology reflects that internal chaos. Stress hormones rise, inflammatory signals increase, and mitochondrial communication becomes less efficient. Energy production becomes fragmented and the system loses coherence.
But when the body moves into states of alignment, something remarkable
happens at the cellular level…..
The mitochondrial network begins to organize itself more efficiently. The inner folds of the mitochondrial membrane, called the cristae, align in ways that allow energy to move more smoothly across the network. Rather than functioning as scattered units, mitochondria behave more like a coordinated field of energy throughout the body.
When this system is synchronized, we call it coherence.
And coherence is the biological signature of health.
In coherent states, energy production becomes more efficient, cellular communication improves, and the organism functions with greater resilience. This is why we often feel different when we are in these states - lighter, clearer, more energized, less burdened by internal friction. We open opportunities for healing.
This perspective also begins to explain why energy-forward modalities can be so powerful in restoring health. Practices that regulate the nervous system and restore energetic balance - meditation, breathwork, grounding with the Earth, sound and vibration therapies, biomagnetic work, resonance repatterning, acupuncture, and other frequency-based approaches - all influence the biological environment in which the mitochondrial network operates.
These approaches are not separate from biology. They are working within it, helping the body return to alignment. For a long time, medicine has focused primarily on chemistry. But energy is the missing link that connects mind, body, and environment into a coherent whole.
What many healing traditions have described for centuries as alignment is simply the body functioning the way it was designed to - with energy moving smoothly through an organized, coherent mitochondrial network across trillions of cells.
So when I sit quietly in the morning, breathe slowly, and set my intention for the day, I am not just calming my mind. I am helping my entire biological system return to alignment.
Health does not begin with chemistry. It begins with alignment.
